Kaizer Chiefs’ Phili signing gives Fernando Da Cruz new attacking options

Kaizer Chiefs’ arrival of winger Langelihle Phili from Stellenbosch FC could reshape the club’s front three, with the new signing expected to challenge for a starting place in attack.

Phili had been a key target for the Soweto club during the transfer process, and his move was finally confirmed after weeks of waiting. His arrival has prompted discussion about how head coach Fernando Da Cruz might arrange his attacking line for the rest of the season.

Da Cruz recently said he needed to add more attacking players to complete his squad, and Phili’s signing gives him another option in a position where the team could use greater variety.

How Chiefs could line up

Phili generally operates as a left winger. He is right-footed and often cuts inside from the flank, either looking to shoot or create chances for his team-mates.

That role was filled by Luke Baartman when Kaizer Chiefs played Kruger United in their opening match of the season. Baartman produced an impressive display and was named man of the match.

With Phili now joining the squad, one possible formation would see him take up the position on the left, while Baartman moves across to the right of the three-man attack. Flavio da Silva would then lead the line as the central striker.

That is not the only option available to Da Cruz. The coach appears to have considerable faith in Mfundo Vilakazi, who could also be selected on the right-hand side, with Phili on the left and Flavio da Silva playing through the middle.

The competition between Baartman and Vilakazi could therefore become one of the key selection decisions in Chiefs’ attack. Phili’s arrival does not necessarily determine the full make-up of the front three, but it gives the coach a natural left-wing option while allowing him to consider different combinations on the opposite flank.

Phili and Vilakazi have both represented the national under-20 team. Their previous involvement together at that level could give them an understanding in attack, something that may benefit Kaizer Chiefs during the season.

For now, expectations are that Phili has arrived at the Soweto giants with the intention of being a starter. His ability to play from the left, cut in on his stronger right foot and contribute both goals and chances could make him an important part of Da Cruz’s plans.

The signing also gives Chiefs flexibility in how they use Baartman and Vilakazi. Baartman has already shown that he can make an impact from the left, while Vilakazi remains a player the coach appears keen to involve. Phili’s addition means all three can now be considered when the club selects its attacking line.

Kaizer Chiefs’ first season match against Kruger United established Baartman as an early standout performer. The arrival of Phili, however, creates a new attacking picture, with Da Cruz now having more options as he looks to settle on his preferred front three.
