Ambition drove me to Morocco – Tshegofatso Mabasa explains MAS Fes move

South African striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has revealed that ambition, rather than financial considerations or familiarity, was the main reason behind his decision to leave the Betway Premiership and join Moroccan champions MAS Fes.

Mabasa’s move to North Africa came as a surprise to many, with expectations that the former Orlando Pirates forward would remain in South Africa after attracting interest from domestic giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, the 28-year-old opted for a new challenge abroad, completing a move to MAS Fes, a club that will represent Morocco in the CAF Champions League after a successful domestic campaign.

The striker explained that the opportunity to compete at the highest level of African club football and be part of an ambitious project played a major role in his decision to make the switch from South Africa to Morocco.

According to Mabasa, the timing of the move was perfect for both himself and MAS Fes, with the club’s desire to compete for major honours aligning with his own career ambitions.

“In terms of timing, it’s perfect for the club and for me as well – because the club is so ambitious, playing in the Champions League, we want to go all the way and win it,” Mabasa told iDiskiTimes.

“We want to win the league again this season, the Throne Cup, we want to win. But Fes has been after me for a while, I’ve known that.”

The South African forward admitted that joining MAS Fes represents an important step in his career as he looks to test himself in a new football environment and compete against some of Africa’s strongest clubs.

“This is a move that is exciting for me, a move that I felt I needed in my career right now, to be part of this exciting club, a very ambitious club.”

Mabasa also expressed his delight with the welcome he has received since arriving in Morocco, praising the reception from the club and supporters.

“It’s great, and the reception over the last couple of days since I’ve been here has been truly wonderful.”

The move brings an end to speculation over Mabasa’s next destination after he enjoyed a productive spell in South African football. His goalscoring ability and experience made him a target for some of the country’s biggest clubs, but the chance to play continental football ultimately proved decisive.

MAS Fes see Mabasa as a key addition to their squad ahead of a demanding season that will include domestic competition and the CAF Champions League. The club’s ambition to challenge on multiple fronts matches the striker’s desire to continue growing and competing at the highest level.
