French-Algerian defender Yanis Zouaoui attracts fresh interest from Montpellier

Montpellier have joined the race to sign French-Algerian defender Yanis Zouaoui, with the Le Havre left-back now attracting interest from two Ligue 1 clubs during the summer transfer window.

Nantes had appeared to be leading the pursuit of the 28-year-old, but Montpellier are now considering a move that could intensify the competition for his signature.

According to L’Équipe, Montpellier have identified Zouaoui as a potential reinforcement for the left side of their defence. The player remains under contract with Le Havre until June 2027, and no official offer has yet been submitted.

The growing interest represents another development in a transfer saga that has gathered momentum in recent weeks. While Nantes continue to be linked with the defender, Montpellier’s involvement has created a fresh challenge in the race for the Marseille-born full-back.

Zouaoui is understood to be highly regarded by Montpellier’s sporting management, which is assessing the possibility of making an approach before the transfer window closes.

The defender enjoyed a solid campaign in Ligue 1 last season, making 30 appearances for Le Havre. He scored once and provided one assist during the campaign, contributing both defensively and in attacking phases from the left flank.

Since arriving at Le Havre in 2024, Zouaoui has made 47 appearances in the French top flight, registering one goal and three assists across his time with the club.

His career has also included success in the lower divisions of French football. He won the National 2 title with SC Toulon in 2019 and later repeated that achievement with FC Martigues in 2022.

Zouaoui also helped Martigues secure promotion by finishing as runners-up in the National league in 2024, adding another notable achievement to his record before moving to Le Havre.

For Montpellier, the potential signing would offer experience and proven knowledge of French football, while Nantes remain firmly in contention as they continue to monitor the situation.

With no official bid yet lodged by either club, the outcome of the transfer remains uncertain. However, Montpellier’s entry into the race has clearly increased the level of competition for a player who has become one of the more closely watched defensive targets in Ligue 1.

As the summer window progresses, attention will now focus on whether either club decides to turn its interest into a formal offer for the Le Havre defender.
