AEL Limassol explore deal for Portugal and Guinea-Bissau midfielder Cafu

Portugal and Guinea-Bissau midfielder Cafu, currently without a club, has been linked with a move to AEL Limassol in the Cyprus League.

The 33-year-old central midfielder became unattached on 1 July 2026 after leaving Turkish side Kasimpasa, ending a spell that began in August 2024. AEL are now understood to be considering whether to pursue an agreement with the experienced player.

Cafu’s career has included spells in Portugal, France, Poland, Greece, England and Turkey. He joined Kasimpasa after leaving Rotherham, having previously spent three seasons at Nottingham Forest following a move from Olympiacos in February 2021.

He has made 59 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring once and providing one assist, while also recording 77 Championship appearances, three goals and six assists. His time in England included a brief Nottingham Forest spell before he moved to Rotherham in July 2023.

Cafu won the Greek league and cup double with Olympiacos in 2020 and was also a two-time Polish champion with Legia Warsaw. His highest recorded market value was €2.5m, while his current valuation is €250,000.

The proposed move would take him to Cyprus as a player without a current club, with AEL Limassol the side linked with his next career step. No agreement has been confirmed, and Cafu remains unattached.
