Wydad Athletic Club are exploring the possibility of re-signing DR Congo international Guy Mbenza, with the Moroccan side considering an approach that could allow the striker to return to Casablanca without a transfer fee.

The Botola club has identified the 25-year-old as a potential addition during the current transfer window and has already indicated its interest in bringing him back following his previous spell with the club during the 2021/22 season.

However, Wydad are not in a position to finance a permanent transfer from Mbenza’s current club. Instead, the club is assessing an alternative arrangement that would see the forward terminate his existing contract before completing a free transfer to Casablanca.

The proposed plan mirrors the circumstances surrounding Yahia Attiyat Allah’s return to Wydad after he reached a mutual agreement to end his contract with FK Sochi before rejoining the Moroccan side.

Club officials believe Mbenza’s familiarity with both Wydad and the Botola could make him a valuable addition as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season. His previous experience at the club means he would require little time to adapt if a deal is completed.

The Congolese striker also arrives as a player in good goalscoring form. During the previous campaign, he featured in 19 official matches, scoring nine goals and registering one assist, maintaining the finishing ability that has defined much of his career.

Mbenza has built extensive experience across several countries since beginning his professional journey in the Republic of the Congo. He started his career with JS Poto-Poto before representing AC Léopards, CS La Mancha and AS Otohô.

His performances earned him a move to Stade Tunisien in December 2018 before he made the switch to Europe with Belgian side Cercle Brugge.

He later continued his career at Royal Antwerp, where he was under contract before joining Wydad on loan in September 2021.

His spell in Morocco proved successful, with the striker establishing himself as one of the club’s important attacking players during his time in Casablanca.

Following his departure from Wydad, Mbenza moved to Saudi Arabian club Al Tai in July 2022 in a deal reportedly valued at €700,000.

He later spent time on loan at Kuwait SC before returning to Muaither SC. In January 2025, he joined Chinese club Liaoning Tieren on a free transfer.

Wydad are now working to determine whether a similar solution to the one that facilitated Yahia Attiyat Allah’s return can be reached.

Any potential move is expected to depend on Mbenza securing an amicable termination of his current contract, allowing the Moroccan club to complete the transfer without paying a transfer fee.
