Kaizer Chiefs complete signing of Stellenbosch winger Langelihle Phili

Kaizer Chiefs have officially completed the signing of highly rated winger Langelihle Phili from Stellenbosch FC, ending one of the most closely watched transfer stories of the window.

The 21-year-old has been unveiled by the Johannesburg club after months of interest, negotiations and uncertainty over whether a deal could be reached. Phili, who was born in Durban, now joins Chiefs at Naturena as one of South African football’s most promising young attacking players.

Soccer Laduma followed the negotiations throughout the transfer pursuit, reporting on the key stages as Amakhosi made Phili one of their main recruitment targets.

The club’s interest was first established earlier in the window before talks were revived. At one stage, negotiations included a proposed player-plus-cash arrangement involving Ashley Du Preez and Given Msimango. Siya sources repeatedly reported that Chiefs remained determined to secure Phili’s signature despite the complications surrounding the discussions.

That persistence has now resulted in the club completing the move for a player who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Stellenbosch FC last season.

Phili finished as Stellenbosch’s leading scorer, scoring nine goals in all competitions. His performances also earned him both the club’s Player of the Season award and the Players’ Player of the Season award.

He made 39 appearances across the Betway Premiership and the CAF Confederation Cup, underlining his regular involvement during a demanding campaign. His ability to contribute in different attacking roles, alongside his consistency and durability, is expected to strengthen Chiefs as they prepare for another season involving domestic and continental football.

The winger has also made progress with South Africa’s national youth teams.

Phili was part of the South Africa Under-20 side that won the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. He has subsequently received a call-up to the national Under-23 squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games is also on the horizon for the Under-23 team, giving Phili another opportunity to establish himself at international level.

Chiefs welcomed the completion of the deal and described the new arrival as one of the leading young talents in South African football.

“Langelihle arrives after a standout season at Stellenbosch, where his performances highlighted his talent, work ethic and enormous potential. We warmly welcome him to the Gold and Black family and look forward to a successful career together,” the club said in announcing the transfer.

The signing concludes a pursuit that saw Chiefs maintain their interest through several changes in the negotiations. Having monitored Phili for months, Amakhosi have now secured one of the standout performers from the previous season and added further attacking quality to their squad.
