Mohamed Salah and Ibrahim Adel discover potential Europa League and Conference League paths
Mohamed Salah could face a European qualifying tie with either Trabzonspor or Besiktas after the draws for the Europa League and Conference League were held on Monday.
Salah has been linked with a move to one of the two Turkish clubs during the current summer transfer window. Neither transfer has been confirmed, but both clubs were included in the potential routes facing a number of Egyptian players in this season’s European competitions.
Trabzonspor have been drawn against the winners of the tie between Ferencvarosi and Gornik Zabrze.
Besiktas, meanwhile, would play the loser of the tie between Dinamo Zagreb and Kauno Zalgiris if they overcome Hradec Kralove. The Turkish side’s possible involvement is significant because Salah could also feature in the Conference League if he joins Besiktas and the club lose in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
The draw also included Lincoln Red Imps, who have Egyptian player Ayman Ghabashi in their squad. They were paired with Omonia, with the winner set to meet Sint-Truidense.
The potential routes for the Egyptian players were revealed as part of the draws for both competitions, with the fixtures dependent on the results of earlier qualifying ties.
In the Conference League, the loser of the Lincoln Red Imps and Omonia tie will play the winner of the match between Larne and Iberia Tbilisi.
The loser of HJK Helsinki and Motherwell will face Freiburg, while the loser of Ferencvarosi and Gornik Zabrze will meet Monaco.
Brighton will play the winner of the tie between CFR Cluj and Tromsø.
The winner of Panathinaikos and CSKA Sofia will face the loser of Hradec Kralove and Besiktas. That tie could therefore provide another possible route into European competition for Salah, depending on his club’s result in the Europa League and any move to Besiktas.
Nordsjælland, who have Egyptian forward Ibrahim Adel in their squad, are also involved in the Conference League draw. The Danish club will face the winner of the tie between Valur and Nordsjælland against the winner of Sheriff Tiraspol and St. Gallen.
The remaining listed tie will see Getafe play the winner of Partizan and Tobol.
The Europa League and Conference League draws took place on Monday, 3 August, and established the potential match-ups for the next stages of qualifying. They also highlighted several possible European appearances for Egyptian players, although Salah’s involvement remains dependent on his club situation during the summer transfer window and the outcome of the qualifying rounds.
