Barcelonas Ferran Torres dilemma deepens as Paris Saint-Germain circle

Barcelona are unable to make Ferran Torres a formal contract offer at present, with financial fair play restrictions forcing the club to delay renewal talks until September despite growing interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Journalist Nil Sola said on the El Larguero programme that Barcelona plan to postpone completing a new agreement with Torres until September, after the start of the La Liga season. The club’s restricted room for manoeuvre in the transfer market is understood to be the main reason for the delay.

Torres is entering the final year of his current Barcelona contract, leaving the club facing an increasingly urgent decision over the Spain forward’s future. If no agreement is reached, he will be able to negotiate with other clubs as a free agent from January 2027.

Barcelona’s financial position is further complicated by an outstanding payment of 8m euros to Manchester City, Torres’ former club. Any new contract would also involve an increase to the player’s salary, meaning the Catalan side cannot currently put an official proposal to him.

The 26-year-old joined Barcelona from Manchester City for 55m euros and has become an important part of their attacking plans. His importance has increased further following the departure of Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, making the prospect of losing Torres a significant sporting and financial setback for the club.

Paris Saint-Germain interest

Torres’ reputation has risen sharply since his performances at the 2026 World Cup, where he helped Spain win the tournament for the second time in their history. His displays have placed him among Europe’s most sought-after forwards and have attracted attention from several leading clubs.

Paris Saint-Germain are considered the strongest candidates to pursue the player. Their manager, Luis Enrique, previously coached Torres with the Spain national team and is keen to strengthen his attack with a forward capable of operating effectively in several positions.

However, sources at Cadena SER have confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain have not made a formal offer to Barcelona. The French club’s interest is clear, but no bid has yet arrived, while Barcelona remain determined not to sell Torres for a cut-price fee.

Barcelona’s preference is to retain the forward and improve the financial terms of his contract. The proposed package would reflect his status as a regular first-team player, although it would not place him among the club’s highest-paid stars.

That approach leaves Barcelona attempting to balance two competing priorities: rewarding Torres for his importance while avoiding a commitment that would place further pressure on the club’s finances. The inability to table an offer immediately has increased the uncertainty around a player whose value has risen considerably since the World Cup.

The coming campaign is expected to be Torres’ sixth season with Barcelona. His time at the club has included a number of difficult and encouraging periods, but his return to prominence with Spain has made his future one of the most closely watched issues of the current summer transfer window.
