Yan Diomande transfer dispute unlikely to block Real Madrid move, FIFA sources say

The dispute between two agencies claiming the right to represent Yan Diomande is not expected to prevent the Leipzig forward from joining Real Madrid, according to legal sources close to FIFA.

The transfer has become entangled in a legal disagreement two weeks after Real Madrid publicly confirmed their interest in the 23-year-old Ivory Coast international. The dispute involves the agencies competing to represent Diomande, raising questions over whether the disagreement could delay or derail a move to the Spanish capital.

However, sources interviewed by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo said FIFA does not have jurisdiction over disputes concerning agents’ fees. Those matters must be settled directly between the parties involved and, according to the same sources, will have no effect on Diomande’s ability to transfer to Real Madrid.

The sources said the move would be completed once Leipzig register the player internationally. Real Madrid could then complete the necessary procedures to obtain his playing licence.

FIFA regulations are described as clear on the issue, with players entitled to exercise their right to move clubs without being obstructed by disputes between agencies or other representatives. The sources said the governing body has previously upheld the same principle in the case of French midfielder Lassana Diarra.

That principle has been a central part of FIFA’s regulations for several years and is intended to provide players with legal protection when similar conflicts arise.

The sources went further by suggesting that even if Diomande chose to terminate his contract with the German club unilaterally, FIFA would immediately allow him to move and play in Madrid. Any compensation he might be required to pay Leipzig as a result of ending the agreement would be treated as a separate matter from his right to register and play for another club.

The dispute began with a disagreement between Max Gradel and his company, Maxidel Management, and Roc Nation, the agency that currently manages Diomande and also represents Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior.

Maxidel Management oversaw Diomande’s move from Spanish club Leganes to Leipzig last year. The company has reportedly filed a case with FIFA, alleging that its contract was breached after Leipzig negotiated with Roc Nation without consulting Maxidel.

That claim has created the legal complications surrounding the proposed transfer, but it does not appear to have changed Real Madrid’s position or Diomande’s ability to complete a move.

Diomande has emerged as one of the most highly regarded young players in European football after an outstanding season with Leipzig in the Bundesliga. His performances have made him a major target for Real Madrid as the club looks to strengthen its attack and compensate for the departures of some of its established stars.

Despite the dispute between the agencies, the transfer is expected to be completed in the coming days. FIFA’s position, as conveyed by the legal sources, is that the ownership of representation fees and the player’s right to move are separate issues.

The case is among the most closely watched developments of the current summer transfer window, but the evidence presented by the sources suggests the agency dispute should not prevent Diomande from beginning the next stage of his career with Real Madrid.
