Ajax prepare fresh move for Barcelona teenager Jofre Torrents as ter Stegen loan nears completion

Ajax are preparing a separate approach for Barcelona left-back Jofre Torrents, with the Dutch club expected to complete the loan signing of Germany international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by Tuesday.

The ter Stegen deal is set to be formally concluded between Monday and Tuesday after several weeks of intensive negotiations involving the player, Barcelona and Ajax.

Ter Stegen has been in Amsterdam since last Friday, where he has completed his medical and signed the required documents ahead of the official confirmation of the move.

Neither club had issued an announcement by Sunday, but the expectation within both organisations is that the transfer is now only waiting for formal confirmation. The deal is not expected to run beyond Tuesday at the latest.

Ajax’s discussions over ter Stegen have also led to a new line of communication with Barcelona over Torrents, according to the programme Que t’hi jugues?

The Dutch club has asked about the possibility of signing the 19-year-old on loan with an option to buy, while also seeking 50% of his future rights, according to information obtained by Marca.

However, negotiations over Torrents remain at an early stage. Barcelona’s board is expected to resume contact with Ajax next week, when the two clubs will examine the proposed structure of the deal in more detail.

Torrents is one of the options available to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick at left-back, alongside Alejandro Balde. Barcelona are also continuing negotiations over the possible return of Joao Cancelo.

The teenager came through Barcelona’s La Selva del Camp academy and made four first-team appearances last season. Three of those outings came in La Liga, while the other was in the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona are, in principle, open to sending Torrents out on loan to help his development and give him more playing time. The defender remains under contract with the Catalan club until June 2028.

Torrents was also among 17 players from La Masia who travelled with Barcelona’s first team to their pre-season camp at Saint George’s Park in England.

The situations involving the two players are at different stages. Ter Stegen’s move to Ajax is regarded as effectively agreed and is awaiting only the official announcement, while Torrents’ future will depend on the talks scheduled for next week.

Those discussions are expected to clarify how seriously Ajax intend to pursue the young defender, as well as the conditions Barcelona would require before allowing him to leave on loan. Ajax’s interest in Torrents emerged during negotiations for ter Stegen, giving the Dutch club a second potential deal to explore with Barcelona.
