Ex-Bucs star Marshall Munetsi puts Wolves’ Premier League return first

Marshall Munetsi says his main priority is helping Wolverhampton Wanderers return to the Premier League after spending the second half of last season on loan at Paris FC.

The Zimbabwean midfielder moved to Ligue 1 during the latter part of the campaign and made 15 appearances for Paris FC, scoring four goals.

He has now returned to Wolves, who are competing in the Championship, and says he is prepared to remain at the club and contribute to its efforts if that is what the management wants.

“At the moment, with the conversations I’ve had with the club and the management, they want to build a team,” he told BBC Radio WM.

“I think the priority for me is to make sure that I also help the team. As long as they want me to be here, I’m also happy to be here.”

Munetsi’s comments suggest he is focused on Wolves’ immediate objective rather than making his loan spell in France the centre of discussions about his future.

The 29-year-old said the club’s central ambition was clear, regardless of changes to the playing squad over the coming period.

“Above all, what is most important right now is to make sure that the club gets back to the Premier League,” he said.

“No matter who comes in, no matter who stays, that is the most important message that has come from the chairman [Nathan Shi] – that the club is to go back.

“We all contributed as much as players also to be where we are. So I think it’s up to us also to make sure we rectify those mistakes.”

The midfielder accepted that the club’s current position was the result of collective responsibility and said the players must play their part in putting things right.

His four goals in 15 Ligue 1 appearances came during a temporary spell with Paris FC, but he is now back with Wolves as the Championship club works towards a return to England’s top flight.

For Munetsi, the message from the club’s chairman has provided a clear direction: Wolves must regain their Premier League status.

He also indicated that the make-up of the squad would not change that objective. Whether players depart or new faces arrive, Munetsi believes the immediate task remains the same.

The Zimbabwe international is therefore willing to continue his association with Wolves, provided the club wants him to stay. His stated position is that helping the team is more important than uncertainty over individual futures.

Wolves’ return to the Premier League has been identified as the club’s priority, and Munetsi says responsibility for achieving that goal lies with the players as much as anyone else at the club.
