Should Sunderland cash in on Arthur Masuaku as Turkey interest grows?

Sunderland could be facing a key decision over Arthur Masuaku’s future this summer, with growing interest from Turkey raising questions over whether the Black Cats should cash in on the experienced defender before his contract situation becomes a concern.

Turkish outlet Konya’nin Sesi has reported that Konyaspor are monitoring the Democratic Republic of Congo international and are interested in bringing him to Turkey during the current transfer window.

With Masuaku entering the final year of his contract at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland must decide whether to keep a seasoned player within their squad or take advantage of the interest and secure a transfer fee before he becomes available as a free agent in 2027.

A difficult loan spell raises questions

Masuaku arrived at Sunderland with a strong reputation after years of experience in the Premier League, but his recent campaign was far from convincing.

The 32-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at French club Lens, where he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. Across all competitions, he featured only six times for the Ligue 1 side, limiting his influence during his spell away from England.

Despite his limited game time, Masuaku remains one of the most experienced defenders Sunderland have at their disposal. His ability to operate at left-back and further forward on the left flank gives him tactical flexibility, while his years competing at the highest level remain valuable.

However, his lack of consistent football has highlighted concerns over whether he still has a major role to play in Regis Le Bris’ plans.

What does Masuaku still offer Sunderland?

Masuaku’s qualities are clear. The Congolese defender remains a strong presence defensively, capable of winning challenges and reading danger before opponents can exploit spaces.

He is also a powerful runner who can carry the ball forward effectively and is comfortable using his physicality to regain possession under pressure.

His versatility is another advantage, with the former West Ham player capable of covering multiple positions on the left side of the pitch.

However, his attacking output remains an area for improvement. For a modern full-back, Masuaku’s contribution in terms of goals and assists has not been consistent enough, making it difficult to justify keeping him as a key option when Sunderland are looking to strengthen their squad.

Why selling could benefit Sunderland

While Masuaku’s experience is valuable, Sunderland may feel this is the right moment to move him on.
