Kenya striker John Avire joins Nairobi United from El Sekka SC

Kenyan centre-forward John Avire has joined Nairobi United from Egyptian club El Sekka SC, completing his return to Kenyan football at the age of 29.

Avire’s move was registered on 1 August 2026, bringing an end to his spell in Egypt and adding an experienced striker to Nairobi United’s squad. No transfer fee has been disclosed for the move.

The 1.89m forward began his career in Kenya before moving to Egypt in 2019. He previously played for Kakamega, Nakumatt FC, Bandari FC and Sofapaka FC, with the switch to Tanta SC marking his departure from the Kenyan clubs listed in his career history.

Avire later represented several Egyptian sides, including Tanta SC, Aswan SC, Future FC, El Makasa, Porto Suez and El Sekka SC. He joined El Makasa from Future FC on a free transfer in September 2021, before moving to Porto Suez the following year. His most recent club move had taken him from Porto Suez to El Sekka SC in July 2023.

His recorded competition appearances in Egypt include 39 Premier League matches, in which he scored once, as well as four Egypt Cup appearances and one assist. He also featured in the Egyptian League Cup during his time in the country.

A right-footed striker, Avire has spent much of his career operating as a central forward. His return gives Nairobi United a player with experience of both Kenyan and Egyptian football, following more than seven years of transfers between clubs in the two countries.

Avire’s earlier Kenyan career included a move from Kakamega to Nakumatt FC in January 2018, followed by transfers to Bandari FC and Sofapaka FC. He then moved abroad when he signed for Tanta SC in August 2019.

His career has included free transfers between a number of Egyptian clubs, including moves to Aswan SC from Tanta SC, El Makasa from Future FC and Porto Suez from El Makasa. The latest switch takes him back to Kenya after his spell with El Sekka SC.
