Chelsea sign England striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton

England striker Danny Welbeck has joined Chelsea from Brighton, completing a move to Stamford Bridge at the age of 35. The forward has signed a contract running until 30 June 2028.

Welbeck arrives with extensive Premier League experience, having made 400 appearances in the competition and scored 90 goals, while also registering 38 assists. His top-level career has included spells with Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton.

The Manchester-born forward began his senior career at Manchester United after progressing through the club’s youth system. He made temporary moves to Preston and Sunderland before returning to Old Trafford, where he won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the 2009 Fifa Club World Cup.

Welbeck moved to Arsenal in September 2014 for €20m and added two FA Cup winners’ medals to his honours list. He also won the English Super Cup with Arsenal in 2017, having previously lifted the trophy twice with Manchester United.

After leaving Arsenal, Welbeck joined Watford on a free transfer in August 2019. He made another free move the following year, switching to Brighton in October 2020, where he spent the next stage of his career before his move to Chelsea.

His record extends beyond the Premier League. Welbeck has scored seven times in the Champions League, six times in the Europa League, 11 times in the FA Cup and seven times in the EFL Cup. He has also made appearances in the Championship and Premier League 2.

Welbeck is a right-footed centre-forward and holds English and Ghanaian nationality. His arrival gives Chelsea a player with experience across domestic and European competition, as well as a career total that includes major honours with both Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea’s agreement with Welbeck takes effect from 1 August 2026, with the striker contracted to the club until June 2028.
