Stellenbosch FC sign Surprise Nhlabathi on two-year deal

Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of versatile defender Surprise Nhlabathi from Baroka FC on a two-year contract, with an option to extend, as they continue to strengthen their squad during a busy transfer window.

The 22-year-old joins the Betway Premiership club as a free agent after Baroka FC lost their professional status following relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

Nhlabathi’s arrival comes at a time when Stellenbosch FC are looking to reinforce their defence. The club lost Thabo Moloisane, Henri Stanic and Athenkosi Mcaba during the off-season, leaving what appears to be a depleted defensive department ahead of the new campaign.

Although primarily a centre-back, Nhlabathi can also operate in midfield, giving Stellenbosch FC another option in those areas. His ability to play in more than one position was highlighted as part of the move, while the length of his contract underlines the club’s intention to make him part of their plans beyond the immediate future.

The transfer was reported by iDiski Times before Stellenbosch FC confirmed the signing. Nhlabathi said he was delighted to join the club and had followed them for several years.

The move represents another addition for Stellenbosch FC as they prepare for the new season and seek to maintain depth across their squad. Nhlabathi will now compete for a place in a team that needs to cover the departures of three defenders while also benefiting from his capacity to contribute in midfield.

His previous club, Baroka FC, suffered relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season and subsequently lost their professional status. That allowed Nhlabathi to leave as a free agent and secure a move to Stellenbosch FC.

The new signing will be expected to help strengthen the club’s defensive options and contribute in every competition in which Stellenbosch FC take part. With a two-year agreement already in place and a further extension available, the transfer gives the player an opportunity to establish himself at a club he has long wanted to represent.
