Tensions between Samuel Eto’o and Alexandre Song seem to persist as the Barcelona midfielder, when asked about Eto’o’s return to the national team, made comments that could be interpreted as a slight dig. Song expressed the importance of teamwork, emphasizing that victory depends on the collective efforts of the entire squad, not just one player.
In a report from France24, Song stated, “As for the return of Eto’o, I think he is a player that we have more to present. We have quality players. To win this match, we don’t need just one player, we need the 25 that the coach has called. It is together that we can succeed in doing something. If we only rely on one person, it will be difficult. Today, football is played with 25 players. It means that we all put our hands together to achieve a positive result.”
The history of rivalry between Song and Eto’o dates back to the 2010 World Cup, where Eto’o was promoted to captain at the expense of Rigobert Song, Alex’s uncle. Despite a temporary truce in November of the previous year, tensions have resurfaced. In October 2012, Eto’o responded strongly to Song’s statements, saying, “Song is not even among the best players in Cameroon.” The relationship between the two players appears strained, indicating that their differences continue to linger.
