South Africa’s national team secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, edging out Cape Verde in a penalty shootout during the Saturday evening match held at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium.
Under the leadership of Percy Tau, the forward from Al Ahly, and the outstanding performance of Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, the “Bafana Bafana” shattered Cape Verde’s aspirations in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
South Africa triumphed over Cape Verde with a 2-1 victory in the penalty shootout after the original and extra time ended in a goalless draw.
Williams showcased his skills in the final moments of the match, making several crucial saves, including the penalty kicks, contributing to the Boys’ team’s journey to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa had advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Morocco, while Cape Verde reached this stage after eliminating Mauritania in the Round of 16.
Cape Verde had an impressive tournament, starting with their qualification at the top of Group 2, which included Egypt, Ghana, and Mozambique.
They continued their success by defeating Mauritania 1-0 in the Round of 16.
With this result, South Africa sets up a showdown with Nigeria in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast 2023.
