Real Native FC: Former Casric Stars confirm name change in fresh bid for promotion

Real Native FC have officially replaced Casric Stars FC as the club’s new identity ahead of the coming season, as the ambitious KwaNdebele side look to erase a series of near-misses in the race for promotion to South Africa’s top flight.

The club, long regarded as one of the stronger sides outside the Premier Soccer League, confirmed the rebrand on Thursday afternoon after teasing what it called a “massive development” on its official Facebook page.

Casric Stars, who famously knocked Orlando Pirates out of the Nedbank Cup in 2023, had already been widely expected to adopt a new name after early reports emerged this week that a change was imminent.

Name change confirmed but reasons remain unclear

Real Native FC announced the decision on their social media platforms, making it clear that the Casric Stars name will no longer be used when the new campaign kicks off.

However, the exact motivation for the rebrand has not yet been made public. Efforts to obtain clarification from club officials were unsuccessful, with members of the management team unreachable by phone at the time of publication.

The former name Casric was closely tied to the club’s origins, created by combining the names of the founding figures behind the project. The shift to Real Native FC marks a clear break from that original set-up and branding.

Supporters hope to end promotion ‘curse’

On the field, Native FC – as the club is now styling itself – have consistently fallen just short of promotion to the top tier, despite assembling competitive squads and featuring regularly in the upper reaches of the table.

Their most damaging issue has been an inability to turn draws into wins at critical moments. Prolonged streaks of stalemates, coupled with inconsistency away from home, have repeatedly undermined their bids to reach the DStv Premiership.

Those struggles have been most evident in tight promotion run-ins. In one notable season, they finished a single point behind champions Polokwane City after drawing each of their final three matches, a sequence that proved decisive in the title race.

They have also stumbled at the final hurdle in the promotion play-offs, where a failure to sustain form has cost them a long-awaited place among the elite.

Fresh identity, same ambition

The decision to adopt the name Real Native FC is seen within the fanbase as a symbolic fresh start for the KwaNdebele club, with many supporters hoping it will help “break the curse” they feel has haunted their promotion campaigns.

While the rebrand does not alter the club’s ownership or competitive status, it underlines a desire to reset both image and mentality after several seasons of frustration.
