Le Havre tie down Junior Mwanga on long-term deal after successful loan spell

Le Havre have completed the permanent signing of Junior Mwanga on a contract running until June 2030, rewarding the defender-midfielder after an impressive loan spell in the 2024-25 season.

The 22-year-old, who came through the academy at Girondins de Bordeaux, returns to Stade Oceane having convinced Le Havre’s hierarchy to make his stay permanent following a convincing campaign in Ligue 1.

Le Havre made the announcement on Wednesday, underlining a strategy built on continuity by securing a player already established within the squad and familiar to the club’s supporters.

Stability the priority for Le Havre

By finalising Mwanga’s transfer, Le Havre’s decision-makers have chosen to consolidate rather than rebuild, opting to keep a player who has already shown his worth in the club’s sky-blue and navy colours.

During his loan spell, Mwanga’s performances persuaded the Normandy club to remove the final hurdles to a full transfer. His ability to operate both in central defence and in midfield made him a valuable and reliable option over the course of the season.

The move allows Le Havre to retain a young player whose potential is still regarded as significant, with the club aiming to continue his development at Ligue 1 level in the coming years.

Strasbourg take heavy financial hit

For RC Strasbourg, the deal brings in around €1.5m, offering some financial return but representing a substantial loss compared with the fee they originally paid.

The Alsace club had spent €12m in the summer of 2023 to sign Mwanga from Girondins de Bordeaux, a major outlay at the time in the hope he would become a long-term cornerstone of their squad.

Three years on from that move, Strasbourg are drawing a line under a transfer that never truly met expectations on their side, as they accept a significant depreciation on their investment.

Le Havre, by contrast, have secured what appears an attractive deal: a player already fully integrated into their dressing room and tactical set-up, now tied to the club on a long-term basis as they continue to build for the future in France’s top flight.
