NEOM SC appoint former Egypt star Ahmed Hegazi as assistant sporting director after retirement

Egyptian football icon Ahmed Hegazi has officially started a new chapter in his career after retiring from professional football and taking up a management role with Saudi club NEOM.

The former Egypt national team captain decided to bring an end to his playing career ahead of the 2026-27 season, closing the curtain on an impressive journey that saw him represent some of the biggest clubs in Egypt, England and Saudi Arabia.

Hegazi, who established himself as one of Egypt’s most respected defenders of his generation, enjoyed a distinguished career with spells at Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Ismaily, English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, and Saudi clubs Al-Ittihad Jeddah and NEOM.

Following his retirement, NEOM moved quickly to retain his experience and leadership qualities by handing him a new position within the club’s sporting department.

The Saudi club officially announced that Hegazi has been appointed as Assistant Sporting Director, allowing him to continue contributing to football from an administrative and technical perspective.

NEOM celebrated the former defender’s transition from the pitch to the boardroom through an official message on its social media platforms.

“After years of giving on the pitch, a new chapter in the career of a captain who concluded his journey with the NEOM logo begins. With greater passion and ambition, Captain Ahmed Hegazi takes on the role of Assistant Sporting Director at NEOM Club,” the club stated.

NEOM also welcomed Hegazi back to the club and expressed confidence in his ability to succeed in his new responsibility.

“Welcome back home, Captain Ahmed, and we wish you success in your new mission,” the club added.

The appointment reflects the value Hegazi brings beyond his performances as a player. During his career, the 35-year-old defender was recognised for his leadership, tactical intelligence and professionalism, qualities that NEOM believes will benefit the club’s sporting project.

Hegazi played a key role in Egypt’s national team for many years, earning the trust of several coaches and wearing the captain’s armband. He was also part of the Al-Ittihad squad that achieved domestic success in Saudi Arabia, helping the club secure major trophies during his time in Jeddah.

His move into football administration marks the beginning of a new challenge, with the former centre-back expected to use his experience from elite-level football to support recruitment, squad development and sporting planning at NEOM.

Having spent years leading teams on the pitch, Hegazi will now look to provide leadership from behind the scenes as he begins his journey in football management and club operations.
