Arsenal weighing British-record bid as Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior targets new deal

Arsenal are exploring a move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior that would require a British transfer record fee and the biggest salary package in the London club’s history, according to a BBC report cited in Egypt.

Vinicius, whose current contract at the Bernabeu runs until the summer of 2027, has emerged as Arsenal’s leading attacking target for the current transfer window, with Mikel Arteta described as a strong admirer of the Brazil international and “very keen” to bring him to north London.

Any agreement would likely demand a fee well in excess of £125m to persuade Real Madrid to sell, as well as a deal that would make Vinicius the highest-paid player Arsenal have ever had. The report adds that senior figures at Arsenal have already crunched the numbers and believe they have the financial capacity to fund such an operation.

Arsenal interest amid Real uncertainty

Vinicius’s future at Real Madrid has been the subject of increased speculation this summer, particularly as the European champions push ahead with plans to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande during the current window.

The pursuit of Diomande, one of the standout performers at the most recent World Cup, has triggered questions about how Real’s forward line might be reshaped and what that could mean for Vinicius, despite his status as one of the club’s key attacking players.

The uncertainty has encouraged leading clubs across Europe to monitor the situation, with Arsenal now positioned as the most serious suitor, according to the BBC report referenced.

Vinicius prioritising contract extension

However, Spanish newspaper AS reports that Vinicius is not actively looking to leave Real Madrid and instead views renewing his contract with the club as his top priority – a stance that is said to align with the wishes of the Real Madrid hierarchy.

AS says the imminent arrival of Diomande has fuelled outside speculation, not least because both the Ivorian winger and Vinicius are represented by the same agent, Frederico Pena. The paper stresses, though, that talk of Vinicius being pushed towards the exit “does not reflect reality”.

Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius are expected to resume next week, once the player returns from his holiday. He is understood to want a face‐to‐face meeting with club executives to clarify his role in Jose Mourinho’s new project and to discuss an adjusted salary that reflects his standing among the elite players in world football.

Mourinho’s attacking plan and stalled talks

Mourinho is reported to be adamant that Real Madrid should not part with a player of Vinicius’s calibre. His vision for the team’s attack involves building a potent front three of Diomande, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius, with Jude Bellingham positioned just behind them.

AS notes that extension talks had already progressed to an advanced stage earlier this year, particularly after the Club World Cup, when Vinicius agreed to lower his original financial demands and Real Madrid increased their offer. At that point, the gap between the two parties had narrowed significantly, but a final agreement was not reached and negotiations were paused.

According to the same report, Vinicius is currently seeking a net annual salary of around €20m, an increase of approximately €5m on the average of his existing wages.

Feeling underappreciated but committed

The Spanish outlet adds that Vinicius has, at times, felt undervalued by the club in recent months, notably as Real Madrid explored or completed moves for other attacking players such as Julian Alvarez and Michael Olise, in addition to the high‐profile arrivals of Bellingham and Mbappe.

Despite those frustrations, AS concludes that Vinicius still sees his long-term future at Real Madrid and wants to remain central to their plans. Within the club, renewing his contract is viewed as potentially the most important piece of business Real Madrid can complete in the coming period.

For now, Arsenal’s willingness to consider a record-breaking move contrasts with the player’s public priority of staying in Spain, setting up a summer in which Real Madrid’s response and the outcome of contract talks with Vinicius will dictate whether any formal negotiations with the Premier League side are possible.
