Kalilou Traore: Ex-Wydad and Mali midfielder killed in road accident aged 38

Former Mali international Kalilou Traore, who previously played for Wydad Casablanca, has died at the age of 38 following a road traffic accident, prompting an outpouring of grief from his former clubs and supporters.

French side Sochaux confirmed the death of their former midfielder, expressing “deep sadness” at the news. Traore played for the Ligue 1 club between 2012 and 2014 before retiring from professional football.

In a statement, Sochaux said he had left a lasting impression during his time at the club and offered heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Traore made 11 league appearances for Sochaux in the French top flight. He brought his professional career to an early end in 2014, aged just 26.

Career across Africa and Europe

Born in Mali, Traore began his career with Real Bamako in his home country before moving to Morocco, where he represented Wydad Casablanca and Hassania Agadir.

He later continued his journey in European football, turning out for Croatian club NK Istra and Danish side Odense Boldklub (Odense), adding further international experience to his career before choosing to retire at a relatively young age.

International recognition with Mali

On the international stage, Traore won 17 caps for Mali, becoming part of a significant generation for the national team.

He was a member of the squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, one of Mali’s most notable achievements in the competition. His contribution helped the team finish on the podium in the tournament.
