Nampalys Mendy closes on Metz switch as ex-Leicester midfielder nears Ligue 2 return

Senegal international Nampalys Mendy is on the verge of signing for FC Metz, with the free agent having been spotted in training with the Ligue 2 club as he prepares to relaunch his career in France.

The 33-year-old defensive midfielder, who left Watford at the end of last season, took part in a session with the Lorraine side on Friday, a move seen as confirmation that an agreement is close, according to Foot Mercato.

Metz, back in Ligue 2 and aiming to stabilise after relegation, are targeting Mendy’s top-level experience to add authority and know-how to their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

Return to French football

Mendy is set to return to French domestic football after several years in England, where he notably played for Leicester City and, most recently, Watford.

The former AS Monaco youth product made his name at Nice before earning a move to Leicester City, later having a spell at Lens and then joining Watford in the Championship.

Last season, he featured in 25 Championship matches for Watford, underlining that he remains a regular contributor at a competitive level despite his age.

Currently without a club following the end of his one-year deal at Vicarage Road, Mendy is now poised to take on a new challenge in a league and a country he knows well.

Leadership for Metz midfield

Capped 35 times by Senegal, Mendy brings substantial international experience, including participation in major tournaments, which Metz hope will translate into added leadership on and off the pitch.

The midfielder, valued at around €700,000 by Transfermarkt, is expected to formalise his move to the club shortly, with only final details thought to be outstanding before an official announcement.

His arrival would give Metz a recognised ball-winner and organiser in front of the defence, a profile the Grenats have been keen to secure to strengthen their spine before the season starts.

Metz, who are looking to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of Ligue 2, view Mendy’s recruitment as a way to bring greater stability and structure to their midfield unit.

Should the deal be completed as anticipated, Mendy will add significant experience from both the Premier League and the Championship to a Metz side seeking an immediate impact following their drop into the second tier.
