Barcelona weigh defensive transfer plans with Ronald Araujo decision central to summer window

Barcelona will only move for a new centre-back this summer if Ronald Araujo leaves the club, with the Uruguay defender’s future understood to be the key factor shaping their defensive recruitment strategy.

Araujo, whose current deal at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys runs until 2031, is seen internally as so important that the club’s hierarchy have no intention of signing another central defender while he remains in the squad, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The report states that Barcelona’s sporting department, led by sporting director Deco, has ruled out bringing in a new centre-back during the current transfer window unless Araujo departs.

If Araujo is sold, Barcelona are expected to target an experienced defender with a strong track record in European football and, crucially, one who is left-footed. The club believe they are already well stocked with younger options in central defence, both in the first team and across their youth ranks, and therefore want any arrival to add balance and maturity rather than further reduce opportunities for their prospects.

Profile of potential Araujo replacements

Several names have been discussed internally as possible options should Barcelona need to replace Araujo, though each comes with its own complications.

Jon Pacheco, the Real Sociedad centre-back, has attracted interest from Barcelona’s scouting department. However, the Catalan club are not currently considering a move for the 23-year-old due to his age, as the preference is for a more seasoned player to step straight into a leading role if Araujo leaves.

Cristian Romero has also re-emerged as a candidate. The Tottenham and Argentina defender is highly regarded by figures within Barcelona’s sporting structure, who value his top-level experience, strong character and combative, competitive style. Nevertheless, Romero is right-footed, while the club’s priority remains to recruit a left-footed centre-back to complement their existing options.

Another defender under consideration is Aymeric Laporte. The Spain international, who has extensive experience in La Liga and the Champions League, would fit the profile of a left-footed, battle-hardened central defender that Barcelona are seeking in the event of an Araujo departure.

However, any attempt to sign Laporte is viewed as complicated. The move would require negotiations with Athletic Bilbao, and relations between the two clubs have been strained in recent years. Tensions have grown in particular around the situation involving Nico Williams, which has added an extra layer of difficulty to any potential discussions over Laporte.

Barcelona stance remains unchanged

Despite the range of names monitored and the clear profile identified for a potential signing, Barcelona’s position remains unchanged: they will not enter the market for a centre-back as long as Araujo is part of the squad.

Only once a definitive decision is made on Araujo’s future will the club formally begin the search for a replacement. Until then, all defensive transfer planning is effectively on hold, with Deco and his team ready to act quickly if the Uruguay international’s situation changes during the current transfer window.
