Dansin tipped for bigger Orlando Pirates role as club ease Makhaula workload

Cemran Dansin is expected to take on a markedly larger role at Orlando Pirates this season, with the Soweto club preparing to lean more heavily on the 21-year-old midfielder as they carefully manage veteran Makhehlene Makhaula’s minutes.

Dansin, who only fully graduated from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) ranks ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, is heading into his second full season with the first team and is regarded internally as being ready for a significant increase in game time.

Club insiders have indicated that Pirates intend to use a similar rotational approach in midfield to the one that has been implemented successfully in other areas of the squad, particularly with Nkosikhona Ndaba and Deon Hotto on the left flank.

“The plan is clear. Makhaula is 36 now, and while he’s still crucial, he will not be able to play every three days,” a source at Pirates told the Siya crew. “Dansin has shown he can handle the big moments. This season, he’ll prove it consistently.”

Rotation strategy shapes midfield future

Makhaula, whose influence in the Pirates engine room remains highly valued, recently agreed a one-year contract extension, as previously reported by the Siya crew. However, the new deal comes with an understanding that his involvement will be more carefully scheduled, with the technical team keen to keep him fresh for key fixtures across the campaign.

That approach mirrors the way Pirates have balanced experience and youth in other positions. Ndaba has gradually taken on more responsibility at left-back while sharing duties with the 37-year-old Hotto, a strategy viewed within the club as a model for sustaining performance levels over a long season.

Dansin is now expected to become Makhaula’s primary understudy in central areas, stepping in more regularly when the fixture list becomes congested and when the club look to inject fresh legs and energy in midfield.

Youngster already used to success

Despite having only 16 senior appearances to his name for the Buccaneers, 12 of which came in the 2025-26 season, Dansin has already been involved in three trophy-winning campaigns with the club. That exposure to high-stakes occasions is understood to be a key factor in the coaching staff’s confidence that he can absorb greater responsibility.

The club believe his combination of physical freshness and ambition makes him well suited to handle a heavier workload during a period in which they are determined to protect the longevity of older squad members.

Pirates view the coming season as a crucial stage in Dansin’s development, with the scale of his opportunity likely to be far greater than in his debut campaign.
