Inacio Miguel future in doubt as Kaizer Chiefs open season under new coach

Kaizer Chiefs will begin the new campaign with one of their most influential defenders, Inacio Miguel, heading into the final year of his contract amid growing uncertainty over whether he will stay at the club beyond next June.

The Angolan-born Portuguese centre-back, who joined Chiefs from Petro de Luanda in July 2024, has entered the last 12 months of his three-year deal – a situation that has prompted his representatives to seek early talks over a possible extension.

Miguel, 30, has become a key figure at Naturena since arriving in a R4.2m transfer from the Angolan giants, but his long-term future is now a live question as Chiefs embark on a new era under head coach Fernando da Cruz.

Contract enters crucial final year

The third and final year of Miguel’s contract took effect on 1 July and is due to run until 30 June 2027.

During his first two seasons with AmaKhosi, Miguel featured in roughly three-quarters of the club’s fixtures, establishing himself as a mainstay in the back line and earning a reputation as a defensive leader.

His performances triggered an improved financial package going into this final year, with his gross earnings reported to have been around R4.6m last season, rising further for the current campaign.

However, with the deal winding down, his representatives have now “put in questions about his future,” and are understood to favour early engagement with the club hierarchy to provide clarity.

Player keen to stay – but talks yet to progress

Miguel’s camp is pushing for proactive discussions rather than waiting until the latter stages of his contract, and the player is believed to be open to committing his future to Chiefs.

His preference is thought to be to remain in Johannesburg, where the club has been praised for its professionalism and the support it has provided.

Chiefs are said to have given the defender “all comforts befitting of a professional footballer”, both in terms of facilities and day-to-day treatment.

Despite that, there is no indication yet of a formal agreement being close, leaving the possibility that a crucial defensive asset could either run down his deal or attract interest from elsewhere as the season progresses.

Divided opinion in the stands

Miguel turns 31 later this year, an age at which many centre-backs are considered to be at or approaching their peak, but his contribution has sparked mixed reactions among supporters.

He swiftly imposed himself as a “commander of note” at the heart of defence after his arrival from Petro de Luanda, bringing physical presence and authority to the back line.

However, concerns were raised early on about the frequency of his yellow cards, with some fans questioning elements of his decision-making and discipline on the pitch.

In contrast, his influence in the dressing room and his general conduct have been widely applauded within the club, where he is regarded as a steadying presence and a model professional.

New coach to shape contract call

The decisive factor in whether Chiefs push ahead with “progressive negotiations” over a longer deal is likely to be how Miguel fits into the plans of new head coach Fernando da Cruz.

The French-born tactician, who has only recently taken charge, is assessing his squad ahead of the season and will have a major say in which senior players are retained beyond their existing terms.

Any moves to extend Miguel’s stay are expected to be influenced by his performances in the early months of the campaign, his ability to adapt to Da Cruz’s tactical approach, and the club’s broader strategy for refreshing an ageing core.

If no agreement is struck before the end of the year, Chiefs could face the prospect of a key defender entering the final months of his contract with his future unresolved – a scenario that would intensify speculation around one of AmaKhosi’s most prominent figures.
