Mamadou Niang, former Senegalese international with 58 caps and 20 goals, voiced his unwavering support for coach Aliou Cissé. The defeat, sealed by a penalty shootout that ended 5-4 and a 1-1 draw at the end of overtime, marked the end of Senegal’s quest to defend their title.

In an interview with Dsport TV, Mamadou Niang, who played a pivotal role in Olympique de Marseille’s success between 2005 and 2010 with an impressive 100 goals in 227 matches, emphasized the need to acknowledge the achievements and positive contributions of Coach Aliou Cissé. Niang dismissed calls for Cissé’s departure, labeling them as premature and ungrateful, given the coach’s notable accomplishments.

“Let us not forget the moments of joy he brought us either. He still took us to the final twice. He made us win this competition, which was the first for Senegal.

So, you must not be ungrateful,” Niang asserted during the interview.

The former international highlighted Cissé’s role in steering Senegal to the finals on two occasions and securing their historic victory in the competition.

Mamadou Niang’s remarks reflect a sentiment of gratitude and loyalty towards Aliou Cissé, underscoring the coach’s significant contributions to Senegalese football.

As discussions regarding the future of the national team ensue, Niang’s perspective adds a nuanced view to the discourse, emphasizing the need to recognize and honor the achievements of the coaching staff amid the disappointment of an early exit from AFCON 2023.
