‘A dangerous path for football’ – Norway boss blasts FIFA over Folarin Balogun suspension reversal

Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness has launched a strong criticism of FIFA’s decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s suspension, insisting the ruling “should never have happened” and warning that such interventions could damage the integrity of football.

Balogun, the United States forward, was initially handed a suspension after receiving a red card in the previous match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, FIFA later reversed the decision, clearing him to feature in the round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The move attracted controversy after United States President Donald Trump publicly claimed credit for influencing the decision, saying his involvement helped secure Balogun’s availability for the knockout fixture.

Klaveness believes the reversal raised serious questions about FIFA’s decision-making process and argued that football’s governing body must be prepared to admit when mistakes are made.

“We all know that this verdict was influenced by external forces and was not procedurally correct. Our leader within FIFA (President Gianni Infantino) must be able to say that this was a mistake,” Klaveness told Norwegian newspaper TT.

‘Slippery slope’ warning over football rules

The former Norway international, who has become one of the leading voices on governance issues in football, warned that changing disciplinary decisions under outside pressure could create dangerous consequences for the sport.

She stressed that maintaining consistent rules is essential for protecting competition and ensuring fairness between teams.

“When you bend the rules in this way, you end up on a slippery slope that puts the entire sport at risk. It’s a big concern for football when you compromise the fundamental rules of the game,” Klaveness said.

Klaveness also revealed that, subject to approval from the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) board, she intends to include the Balogun controversy in the federation’s previous communication regarding FIFA’s decision to award Trump the FIFA Peace Prize.

The potential move highlights Norway’s growing concerns over FIFA’s governance and the influence of external figures in football decisions.

Sweden joins criticism over controversial ruling

Norway is not the only Nordic federation to question FIFA’s handling of the matter.

The Swedish Football Association also raised concerns following the lifting of Balogun’s suspension. Association chairman Simon Åström previously criticised the decision, arguing that the issue went beyond one player and concerned the wider credibility of the sport.

Åström said the matter was about “the integrity of the sport” and confirmed that he had contacted FIFA seeking an explanation for the decision.

The controversy has reignited debate over consistency in disciplinary decisions, with critics questioning whether external pressure can influence sporting rulings at the highest level.
