Omar Artan is the best referee in Africa, says CAF president after US World Cup entry denial

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has thrown his full support behind Somali referee Omar Artan, describing him as the best match official on the African continent despite the United States’ decision to deny him entry ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Artan was among the officials affected by travel restrictions that prevented him from taking part in the global tournament in the United States, but Motsepe insists CAF remains committed to supporting the highly-rated referee and protecting the development of African match officials on the international stage.

“Omar Artan is the best referee in Africa, and we will continue to support him despite America’s decision to deny him entry into the country for the World Cup,” Motsepe said on Wednesday while addressing the media in Johannesburg.
