Khanyisa Mayo: Kaizer Chiefs complete permanent transfer of forward from CR Belouizdad

Kaizer Chiefs have made a major statement of intent for the new season by turning Khanyisa Mayo’s loan move into a permanent transfer from Algerian club CR Belouizdad, in a deal understood to be worth close to R10m.

The 27-year-old forward spent last season on loan at Naturena and has now signed permanently for Amakhosi, who confirmed the move on Thursday.

“Kaizer Chiefs have completed the permanent signing of Khanyisa Mayo from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad, following his loan spell with the Glamour Boys last season. The deal was finalised for an undisclosed fee agreed upon between the two Clubs,” the club stated.

Mayo, previously on the books of Cape Town City, becomes Chiefs’ fourth confirmed signing of the current transfer window, following the arrivals of Thabo Moloisane, Renaldo Leaner and Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko.

Ambitious plans under Da Cruz

Chiefs have framed Mayo’s capture as central to their rebuilding project under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

“Mayo, who worked hard during his one-season loan stint, now commits his future to Chiefs as the team prepares for an ambitious campaign under head coach Fernando Da Cruz. The 27-year-old forward will be a key part of the squad competing in both the domestic league and continental CAF competitions,” the statement continued.

The Soweto giants are aiming to re-establish themselves as consistent challengers for the league title and to make a renewed impact in African club competitions after several seasons of underachievement.

Mayo’s permanent signing underlines the club’s determination to refresh their attacking options and add greater depth ahead of a demanding campaign on multiple fronts.

Injuries slowed loan impact

Mayo, son of former South Africa international Patrick Mayo, arrived at Chiefs last season after leaving Cape Town City for CR Belouizdad.

During his loan spell, he made 15 appearances and scored two goals, but his momentum was checked by injury interruptions that limited his overall impact.

Even so, Chiefs were sufficiently convinced by his qualities and potential contribution to commit to a long-term deal, having tracked his development closely in the Premier Soccer League.

Fan favourite at Naturena

Chiefs highlighted the forward’s dynamism and popularity among supporters as key reasons for securing him on a permanent basis.

“Known for his pace, creativity, and eye for goal, Mayo has already established himself as a fan favourite at Naturena. His permanent move strengthens Amakhosi’s attacking options and signals the Club’s intent to challenge for glory both locally and across Africa.

“We welcome Khanyisa officially and look forward to his continued contributions.”

Mayo will now compete for a starting berth in Da Cruz’s front line as Chiefs seek to sharpen an attack that has often been criticised for inconsistency.

With early business in the transfer market almost complete and a new coaching set-up in place, the club is hoping that Mayo’s familiarity with the environment – alongside his versatility in the final third – will help accelerate their push back towards the summit of South African and continental football.
