CAF increases WAFCON prize money to $2 million ahead of tournament in Morocco

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the winner of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the champions set to receive $2 million.

Motsepe made the revelation during a press conference on Wednesday, describing the latest adjustment as part of CAF’s continued commitment to investing in women’s football and rewarding excellence across the continent.

The increase represents the third major prize money boost in three years, highlighting CAF’s determination to elevate the status of African competitions and provide greater financial support to participating teams.

The WAFCON champions previously received a lower financial reward, but CAF’s latest decision marks a substantial rise aimed at improving the competitiveness of the tournament and encouraging more investment in women’s football.

Motsepe stressed that the growth of women’s football remains one of CAF’s key priorities, with the governing body working to create more opportunities for players, national teams, and football stakeholders across Africa.

The upcoming WAFCON is expected to attract some of the continent’s biggest football nations, including defending champions Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Cameroon, and other top contenders battling for continental supremacy.

The much-anticipated tournament has been scheduled to take place in East Africa, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda set to co-host the tournament in August.

The tournament will mark a historic moment as the three East African nations jointly host Africa’s biggest football competition, bringing AFCON to the region for the first time in decades.

CAF has continued to emphasise the importance of expanding major tournaments across different regions of the continent while improving infrastructure, organisation, and the overall football experience for fans.

With increased prize money for WAFCON and the upcoming AFCON tournament in East Africa, CAF says it is focused on strengthening African football and ensuring that competitions deliver greater value for players, teams, and supporters.
