Sundowns unveil retro-inspired Puma kit to celebrate CAF Champions League triumph

Mamelodi Sundowns have launched a new retro-themed home kit that will be the first to carry a second star above the club badge, marking their most recent CAF Champions League triumph.

The 2026-27 strip, unveiled on Wednesday while the South African champions are on pre-season tour in Austria, revives the iconic look first worn in 1994 and is part of what the club and technical sponsor Puma describe as a tribute to Sundowns’ rich history and continental success.

Masandawana and Puma have been partners since 2016 in what is billed as the biggest technical sponsorship agreement in Puma South Africa’s history.

‘Iconic look’ returns with 1994 throwback

In a statement announcing the kit, the club said the design deliberately reaches back more than three decades to one of the most recognisable eras in Sundowns’ history.

“An iconic look returns with the newHomekit, a design rooted in the club’s identity while reimagining a historic kit from 1994. This modern interpretation pays tribute to the proud legacy of Mamelodi Sundowns, while symbolising the club’s progress and ambitions for the future. As was the case in 1994, the new Home kit features a yellow shirt, blue shorts and white socks. While the finer details inspired by the 1994 jersey are the popping red PUMA logos and distinctive thin green stripe on the collar, the jersey also has subtle debossed yellow stripes,” the club said via a statement.

The traditional yellow, blue and white combination is complemented by contemporary detailing, with the subtle striping and colour accents intended to connect past and present.

Puma hails ‘formidable team’ with Masandawana

Puma South Africa underlined the significance of the new design, not only as a nod to history but also as a celebration of Sundowns’ rise as a dominant force in African football.

“Mamelodi Sundowns and PUMA have formed a formidable team over the past decade and with the new kit we wanted to honour and celebrate all the players who have contributed to the club’s successful legacy,” said Brett Bellinger, PUMA SA Marketing Director.

“It is fitting that this Shine on Masandawana kit will be the first to feature a second star marking the club’s latest CAF Champions League win. More evidence that with Masandawana the Sky is the Limit.”

The second star, placed above the crest, is a standard symbol in world football used to signify a major title such as a continental club crown. For Sundowns, it underlines their ambitions to dominate beyond domestic competition.

Pre-season in Austria, launch at home

While the first team step up their pre-season preparation in Austria, following an opening phase of training in Pretoria, the new kit has been presented to supporters in South Africa and to the wider football community.

The timing of the launch ensures the strip will be worn throughout the coming league campaign and in the club’s next tilt at continental honours.

Price and availability

Supporters will have access to two main editions of the shirt, mirroring international trends at top clubs.

“Supporters can purchase two official versions of the kit, the Authentic Players shirt for R2399 as worn by the players on the pitch, or the Replica men and women for R1299, and the Replica kids for R1199. Available at PUMA retail stores,PUMA.com, JD Sports, Totalsports, Sportsmans Warehouse and Studio 88.”

The Authentic version is identical to that worn by the squad on match days, while the replica range offers a more affordable option for adults and children.

With a design that merges a celebrated 1990s aesthetic with modern styling and the added prestige of a second continental star, Sundowns and Puma will be hoping the new kit becomes another symbol of a successful season for the Tshwane club.
