Arsenal’s dream summer transfer window has suddenly become more complicated.

The Gunners are also facing competition for another long-term target, Bradley Barcola. The Paris Saint-Germain winger remains admired by Arsenal, but interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool could make a deal significantly more difficult.

With two major attacking targets becoming increasingly complicated, Arsenal cannot afford to hesitate.

The answer could be found in Spain.

Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has emerged as a realistic and potentially transformative option for Arsenal, with the 24-year-old reportedly available through a €90 million (£77 million) release clause — a figure within the financial capabilities of the Premier League champions.

The timing could be ideal.

Arsenal have already moved on from Leandro Trossard this summer, while questions remain over whether Gabriel Martinelli is the long-term solution on the left side of Arteta’s attack. Adding another explosive wide player has become a clear priority.

Williams would provide something Arsenal have occasionally lacked: devastating pace and unpredictability in one-on-one situations.

The Spanish international is one of Europe’s most dangerous transition attackers, capable of turning defensive situations into attacking opportunities within seconds. His ability to beat defenders with acceleration and direct running would add another dimension to an Arsenal attack that has often relied on structured possession and intricate combinations.

Numbers prove Williams can elevate Arsenal’s attack

Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, Williams has registered 35 goals and 32 assists, underlining his influence in the final third.

His attacking profile is built around constant threat. The Athletic Club winger regularly stretches defensive lines with his speed, forcing opponents to retreat and creating additional space for teammates.

Although his final decision-making can still improve, that is an area Arteta’s coaching staff could refine. The Arsenal manager has built a reputation for developing technically gifted players and improving their efficiency in possession.

Williams created 230 chances during that period, just one fewer than Athletic’s leading creator Alex Berenguer. His passing accuracy of 78.55 percent may require improvement in Arsenal’s possession-heavy system, but at only 24 years old, there remains significant room for development.

The bigger question surrounding Williams is not his ability — it is his availability.

Injury concerns must be considered, with the winger missing 19 matches last season. Arsenal would need assurances that his fitness problems can be managed, especially given the demands of Premier League football and Champions League competition.

Arsenal need Williams’ intensity and winning mentality

Beyond his attacking numbers, Williams offers qualities that fit Arsenal’s identity.

The winger has demonstrated exceptional commitment without the ball, competing in more one-on-one battles than any other Athletic player in recent seasons. He has contested 1,764 duels and won 785 of them, while only Dani Vivian has regained possession more times for the club than Williams’ 632 recoveries.

That work ethic aligns with Arteta’s expectations.

Arsenal’s success under the Spaniard has been built not only on technical quality but also on intensity, pressing and collective responsibility. Williams’ willingness to fight defensively would make him a natural fit.

The Gunners also need more explosive speed. While Bukayo Saka remains one of the league’s most complete attackers, Arsenal have sometimes lacked a player capable of consistently attacking space and frightening defenders in open areas.

Williams brings exactly that.

With the new Premier League season approaching quickly, Arsenal cannot afford another prolonged transfer pursuit that ends in disappointment. The Rogers setback should not force panic — it should encourage decisive action.

If the opportunity exists to secure one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers, Arsenal should move aggressively.
