Roma join Inter in race for Algeria defender Rafik Belghali

Algeria international Rafik Belghali has emerged as a transfer target for both Roma and Inter Milan following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite Hellas Verona’s relegation from Serie A.

The 24-year-old right-back is attracting growing interest from some of Italy’s biggest clubs after an encouraging debut season in the Italian top flight.

Roma identify Belghali as priority target

According to Foot Mercato, Roma have made Belghali one of their leading targets as they look to strengthen the right side of their defence.

The Giallorossi are searching for reinforcements after Juventus secured the signing of Turkish defender Zeki Celik, prompting the club to step up their pursuit of the Algerian international.

Roma are reportedly considering an initial loan deal with an option to make the move permanent.

Inter also monitoring Algeria defender

Inter Milan are also keeping close tabs on Belghali as they continue their search for a possible successor to Dutch full-back Denzel Dumfries.

The Nerazzurri have turned their attention to the Algerian after failing to complete moves for Marco Palestra and Anane Khalaili.

Belghali is also believed to have attracted interest from fellow Serie A clubs Fiorentina and Bologna, highlighting his growing reputation in Italy.

Strong season despite Verona relegation

Belghali joined Hellas Verona from Belgian side KV Mechelen just last year in a deal worth around €2 million.

He made 26 Serie A appearances, scoring two goals during the campaign, although he was unable to prevent Verona from being relegated to Serie B.

The defender’s season was also disrupted by recurring ankle injuries that sidelined him between January and March 2026.

Belghali’s displays for Algeria at the 2026 World Cup significantly enhanced his profile, with the right-back earning widespread praise for his performances on football’s biggest stage.

His performances have helped increase his market value, with reports suggesting Hellas Verona would demand around €15 million to sanction a permanent transfer.
