Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed has been appointed as the fourth official for the 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff between France and England, extending Africa’s presence among the tournament’s elite match officials.

FIFA confirmed that fellow Moroccan Zakaria Brinsi will serve as the reserve assistant referee for Saturday’s encounter at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which kicks off at 10:00 p.m. Morocco time. Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela will take charge of the match, assisted by compatriots Jorge Urrego and Tulio Moreno.

FIFA rewards strong World Cup performances

The latest appointment caps an impressive campaign for Jayed, who has steadily earned FIFA’s confidence throughout the tournament.

The 39-year-old has officiated four matches at the World Cup, overseeing the group-stage fixtures between Germany and Curaçao and Portugal against Uzbekistan. He also served as fourth official during Germany’s Round of 32 meeting with Paraguay and the Round of 16 clash between Mexico and Norway.

His selection for another knockout-stage fixture underlines FIFA’s trust in his performances during the expanded 2026 tournament.

Morocco continues proud refereeing tradition

Jayed has already made history in the United States by becoming only the third Moroccan centre referee to officiate at a men’s FIFA World Cup, following the late Said Belqola and Mohamed Guezzaz.

His opening assignment between Germany and Curaçao also ended a 24-year wait for a Moroccan centre referee to officiate at the global showpiece.

Morocco’s officiating team has enjoyed a strong presence throughout the tournament, with assistant referees Zakaria Brinsi and Mustapha Akarkad supporting Jayed, while Hamza El Fareq has been among the video assistant referees selected by FIFA.

Jayed’s latest appointment ensures Morocco and African officiating will once again be represented on one of the World Cup’s biggest stages as France and England battle for third place ahead of Sunday’s final.
