Lamine Yamal is on course to realise a lifelong ambition after Spain and Argentina booked their places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, setting up the teenager’s first competitive meeting with Lionel Messi.

The Spain forward had already revealed his wish to exchange shirts with the Argentina captain if the two nations met in Sunday’s showpiece, and that dream is now set to become reality following the semi-final results.

Yamal’s wish comes true

Before the final line-up was confirmed, Yamal was asked by Mundo Deportivo which player he most wanted to swap shirts with during the tournament.

“Messi… in the World Cup final,” he replied, while expressing his hope that Spain and Argentina would meet in the tournament’s decisive match.

That scenario became a reality after Spain defeated France 2-0 to reach the final, before Argentina fought back to beat England 2-1 in a dramatic second semi-final.

Barcelona generations prepare for historic meeting

Sunday’s final will also bring together two products of Barcelona’s renowned academy from different eras.

Messi built his legendary career at the Catalan club, becoming one of the greatest footballers of all time, while Yamal has developed into one of Barcelona’s brightest young stars.

The encounter is expected to carry added emotion, with Messi potentially making his final appearance at a FIFA World Cup.

A memorable occasion awaits

For Yamal, the final offers more than just the chance to compete for football’s biggest prize.

The 18-year-old will have the opportunity to test himself against the player who inspired him growing up and, if his wish is granted, leave the World Cup final with Messi’s shirt as a lasting reminder of one of the biggest moments of his career.
