Former Morocco goalkeeper and coach Badou Zaki has come to the defense of Achraf Hakimi following the Atlas Lions’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the defender’s viral post-match smile did not reflect a lack of emotion after the painful defeat to France.

A video showing Hakimi sharing a brief laugh on the pitch after Morocco’s quarter-final exit quickly spread across social media, attracting criticism from some disappointed supporters who felt the moment suggested the Paris Saint-Germain star was unaffected by the loss.

However, Zaki believes the reaction was unfair, explaining that the smile was simply part of Hakimi’s professionalism and a way of hiding the disappointment he was experiencing internally.

Zaki urges fans to support Hakimi and Morocco squad

Speaking during a recent media appearance, Zaki called on supporters and analysts to show appreciation for the Moroccan team’s efforts rather than focusing on a single moment after their elimination.

“I watched the video. Sometimes you laugh when you are crying blood on the inside. That is why, instead of consoling Hakimi and the Moroccan national team who gave their absolute all on the pitch and gifted us beautiful matches and memorable evenings, we shouldn’t be turning on them at a moment like this,” the former international said.

Zaki highlighted the emotional demands placed on footballers, particularly after major defeats, noting that players often have to maintain composure and respect their opponents despite feeling devastated.

Hakimi’s smile did not hide his disappointment

The former Morocco star explained that sporting traditions require players to show respect after matches, even when the result causes deep frustration.

“And then we focus on a specific moment and see Hakimi laughing. But how can I, for example, go and shake hands with the French players while frowning? The player is smiling, but deep down, he is harbouring immense anger,” Zaki added.

Morocco’s historic World Cup campaign

Morocco’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end after a 2-0 defeat against France in the quarter-finals.

Despite the elimination, the Atlas Lions’ impressive run further strengthened their reputation as one of the leading forces in international football, following a memorable tournament campaign that earned admiration around the world.
