Lens plot Lois Openda comeback as Champions League return fuels reunion push
RC Lens are exploring a sensational move to bring former forward Lois Openda back to the club as they prepare for another UEFA Champions League campaign, according to reports from Foot Mercato.
The Ligue 1 side are keen to strengthen their attacking options ahead of their return to Europe’s elite competition, with sporting director Jean-Louis Leca reportedly interested in reuniting with the Belgian striker who enjoyed a standout spell at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Openda left Lens in 2023 for a reported €40 million transfer to RB Leipzig after playing a key role in one of the club’s most memorable seasons. His departure came after a prolific campaign in which he scored 21 goals in 42 appearances, helping Lens finish just one point behind eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Juventus struggles open door for possible return
The 26-year-old has since built a respectable record in Germany, scoring 41 goals in 93 matches for RB Leipzig. However, his latest chapter at Juventus has been far more challenging.
Openda endured a difficult season in Turin, managing just two goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. His struggles have raised questions over his long-term future, with Lens now monitoring the possibility of bringing him back to France.
A return would offer the striker an opportunity to rediscover the form that made him one of Ligue 1’s most feared attackers, while Lens would add proven Champions League experience to their squad.
Wages remain biggest obstacle
Despite the interest from Lens, negotiations could prove complicated due to Openda’s current salary at Juventus.
The French club are believed to be willing to pursue a reunion, but Juventus may need to contribute towards his wages to make the deal financially realistic.
Lens are not the only club monitoring the situation, with English Championship side Coventry City also reportedly interested in securing the striker’s services.
With Champions League football on the horizon, Lens are looking to build a squad capable of competing domestically and in Europe, and Openda’s familiarity with the club makes him an attractive option.
