Rulani Mokwena in line for Pyramids coaching job

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant coaching role at Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC ahead of the 2026/27 season.

According to reports, the former CAF Champions League winners are considering the highly-rated tactician as they prepare for a new chapter following the end of the previous campaign.

Pyramids are believed to be impressed by Mokwena’s coaching philosophy, tactical acumen and experience on the African continent.

The 39-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks following an underwhelming spell with Libyan outfit Al Ittihad. Despite arriving with high expectations, Mokwena has struggled to produce consistent results, with reports suggesting he is on the verge of leaving the club after a disappointing run of performances.

His situation in Libya has sparked interest from several clubs, and Pyramids FC are now reportedly weighing up a move to bring the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach to Cairo.

Mokwena is no stranger to North African football, having gained valuable experience during coaching spells in both Morocco and Libya. His familiarity with the region, combined with his modern tactical approach and reputation for developing attractive, possession-based football, is believed to have made him an appealing option for the Egyptian club.

The South African tactician built his reputation during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he guided the Pretoria-based giants to domestic success and established himself as one of the continent’s brightest young coaches. His work earned widespread praise for its attacking philosophy and ability to maximise the potential of his squad.

Pyramids FC, meanwhile, are expected to strengthen both their technical team and playing squad as they prepare to defend their CAF Champions League crown while also challenging for domestic honours in Egypt.

A move to the Egyptian giants could provide Mokwena with the perfect platform to revive his coaching career after a difficult stint in Libya. Taking charge of one of Africa’s most ambitious clubs would also offer him another chance to prove himself on the continental stage and reaffirm his status as one of the game’s most promising managers.

While no official agreement has been announced, reports indicate that Mokwena remains firmly on Pyramids FC’s shortlist as the club intensifies its search for a new head coach ahead of the start of the new season.
