French authorities will deploy 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country for Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final against Spain following security incidents that occurred after France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco.

According to Foot Mercato, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that extensive security measures would be in place throughout the day and into the evening, with authorities adopting what he described as a zero-tolerance approach.

The large-scale operation will also coincide with Bastille Day celebrations, which are expected to draw large crowds across France.

Enhanced security across the country

Nunez told BFMTV that security personnel would be deployed nationwide, with operations running continuously during the day and evening.

Security arrangements for the annual military parade on the Champs-Élysées are scheduled to begin at 10:00 local time, while France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain is set to kick off at 21:00 local time.

The heightened security presence follows concerns raised after France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Quarter-final celebrations overshadowed by tragedy

Although Nunez said the evening after France’s win over the Atlas Lions had “gone generally well,” the celebrations were marred by a fatal incident in northern France.

A 17-year-old girl died after being struck by a van she had climbed onto while celebrating France’s victory, while authorities also confirmed that 89 people were arrested during the post-match celebrations.

The increased security measures reflect efforts by French authorities to maintain public order as the national team attempts to secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain.
