World Cup 2026: 'We want to do it again' - Nico Williams fires warning to France ahead of semi-final

Spain winger Nico Williams has set his sights on another victory over France after La Roja booked a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final meeting with Les Bleus.

The European champions secured their place in the last four with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Belgium at SoFi Stadium. Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring before Charles De Ketelaere equalised for Belgium, but substitute Mikel Merino struck in the 88th minute to send Spain into their first World Cup semi-final since their title-winning campaign in 2010.

Looking ahead to the meeting with France, Williams pointed to Spain’s recent success against Les Bleus and made clear that Luis de la Fuente’s men believe they can overcome their neighbours again.

“We have already beaten them twice and we want to do it again,” Williams stated.

“A very difficult match awaits us, but we hope that luck will be on our side. For the neutral viewer, it will be a game that will be very exciting to watch.”

Williams’ comments reference Spain’s recent victories over France, including their dramatic Euro 2024 semi-final triumph. The two European giants will now renew their rivalry on the biggest stage, with a place in the World Cup final at stake.

Spain’s win over Belgium demonstrated their resilience once again. After conceding their first goal of the tournament, La Roja refused to lose control and continued pushing for a winner before Merino capitalised on a late goalkeeping error. Spain have now extended their unbeaten competitive run to 37 matches dating back to March 2023.

France, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals after overcoming Morocco in the quarter-finals. Didier Deschamps’ side possess one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks, with Kylian Mbappé leading their charge and Michael Olise providing the creativity.

The semi-final promises a fascinating clash of styles. Spain will look to dominate possession through Rodri and Pedri while using Lamine Yamal and Williams to stretch the French defence. France, however, have the pace and individual quality to punish La Roja in transition.

For Williams, recent history gives Spain every reason to approach the match with belief. La Roja are now just one victory away from their first World Cup final since 2010, but France stand between them and another opportunity to compete for football’s biggest prize.
