World Cup 2026: Patrice Evra hails ‘evolving’ Kylian Mbappe as France star makes smarter decisions away from Madrid
Patrice Evra believes Kylian Mbappe has taken his game to another level at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, praising the France forward for becoming a more complete player amid his struggles at Real Madrid.
Mbappe continued his outstanding tournament run by scoring in France’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Morocco, helping Didier Deschamps’ side secure a place in the final four.
The 27-year-old remains among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot, sitting level with Lionel Messi on eight goals and competing with the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
Despite his remarkable form on the international stage, Mbappe’s club season at Madrid has been far from smooth. The forward endured a difficult spell that saw him dropped from the starting lineup, with sections of the club’s supporters questioning his future.
However, Evra believes the challenges at club level have not affected Mbappe’s impact for France, insisting the forward has shown greater maturity and decision-making during the tournament.
‘He’s making better decisions’ – Evra praises Mbappe’s maturity
Speaking to Stake, the former Manchester United and France defender highlighted Mbappe’s willingness to involve teammates more, arguing that his improved all-round contribution has made France a stronger team.
“Listen, when you have Kylian Mbappe, of course you play to his strengths. That is normal. You don’t have that kind of weapon and pretend he is just another player,” Evra said.
“I’ve been tough on Kylian before, but never because of his talent. It’s because I want him to become even more complete, more responsible for the whole team, not just for the moments when he scores.”
Evra believes Mbappe’s approach at the World Cup shows a player who is developing beyond simply being France’s main attacking threat.
“What I like in this World Cup is that he’s making better decisions. He’s involving people more. France are stronger when Mbappe is at his best, but let’s be clear: you don’t win a World Cup with one player. Everyone still has to do their job.”
Mbappe prioritising World Cup success over individual glory
Mbappe has now scored 20 goals across World Cup tournaments, further cementing his place among the competition’s greatest performers.
Evra believes the France captain would happily sacrifice personal accolades if it means lifting another World Cup trophy with Les Bleus.
“If he finishes with five goals and France lift the trophy, I promise you he’ll take that every day over winning the Golden Boot and going home early.”
France’s impressive run under Deschamps has continued in Qatar, with the team winning 12 of their last 13 competitive matches. Mbappe’s form has been central to that success, with Evra convinced the forward’s evolving approach has made him even more dangerous.
