Aston Villa join race for Senegal star Pape Gueye, ready to trigger €45 million release clause
Premier League side Aston Villa have reportedly joined the race to sign Senegal international Pape Gueye from Villarreal, with the Midlands club prepared to activate the midfielder’s €45 million release clause.
Gueye has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders of the summer transfer window following an outstanding 2025/26 campaign in Spain and his impressive performances for Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Interest in the former Marseille midfielder has intensified in recent weeks. Premier League rivals Everton F.C. had already been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, but Aston Villa have now entered the battle as they seek to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.
According to reports, Villa manager and the club’s recruitment team have identified Gueye as a priority target following the injury setback suffered by Belgian international Amadou Onana. The injury has accelerated Villa’s search for a commanding central midfielder capable of bringing balance, energy and quality to the squad.
The report adds that Aston Villa are willing to meet the €45 million release clause in Gueye’s Villarreal contract, demonstrating their determination to complete the transfer before rival clubs can make their move.
Gueye’s stock has risen considerably over the past year after establishing himself as one of Villarreal’s most influential players. During the 2025/26 La Liga campaign, the Senegalese midfielder contributed five goals and two assists, while consistently impressing with his tireless work rate, defensive discipline and ability to drive his team forward from midfield.
His performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup further enhanced his reputation, where he was among Senegal’s standout players despite the Teranga Lions’ disappointing exit. His commanding displays against some of the world’s best teams showcased his composure under pressure, tactical intelligence and ability to compete at the highest level.
Capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, box-to-box midfielder or in a more advanced central role, Gueye’s versatility is regarded as one of his greatest strengths. His ball-winning ability, physical presence and progressive passing make him an ideal fit for the fast-paced demands of the Premier League.
Villarreal, however, are under no immediate pressure to sell. The Senegal international remains under contract with the Spanish club until June 2028, placing the Yellow Submarine in a strong negotiating position. Unless his release clause is triggered, Villarreal are expected to resist offers for one of their key performers.
For Aston Villa, landing Gueye would represent another major statement of ambition as they continue building a squad capable of challenging at the top end of the Premier League and competing in European competitions. His arrival would add experience, athleticism and quality to Villa’s midfield while helping to offset the absence of Onana.
With Everton also monitoring the situation and other clubs expected to register interest, the race for Gueye’s signature could intensify in the coming weeks. Should Aston Villa follow through on their reported willingness to activate his €45 million release clause, they may place themselves firmly in pole position to secure one of Africa’s most in-demand midfielders this summer.
