African football unites behind Gianni Infantino ahead of FIFA Presidential election
African football has thrown its full weight behind FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of the next FIFA presidential election, with all 54 member associations of the Confederation of African Football confirming their decision to support his bid.
The announcement underlines Africa’s continued backing for Infantino, who has enjoyed strong relations with the continent since taking charge of world football’s governing body in 2016.
CAF member associations reached a unanimous agreement to support his re-election campaign for the 2027–2031 term.
The decision means Africa’s 54 votes at the FIFA Congress will be directed towards the Swiss-Italian administrator as he seeks another term in office.
The continent remains one of the largest voting blocs within FIFA, giving its support significant influence in the presidential race.
CAF’s backing reflects the relationship built between Infantino and African football leadership during his tenure.
Under his presidency, FIFA has increased financial support for member associations through development programmes, while Africa has also secured an expanded presence at the FIFA World Cup starting with the 2026 edition.
Support from all CAF members was confirmed at a meeting of African football representatives, who unanimously endorsed Infantino’s candidacy.
Infantino, who was first elected FIFA president in 2016 following the resignation of Sepp Blatter, has since been re-elected twice and is now aiming to continue his leadership of the organisation.
Africa’s backing could prove crucial as the FIFA presidential election approaches, with the continent expected to play a decisive role in determining the future direction of global football governance.
