Rulani Mokwena: Pyramids are ready to compete for titles

Pyramids head coach Rulani Mokwena says the Egyptian club are determined to establish themselves among Africa’s leading teams and compete for major honours.

Mokwena believes Pyramids’ rapid rise has given the club an opportunity to create their own identity rather than live in the shadow of Egypt’s traditional giants, Al Ahly and Zamalek.

“Pyramids is an ambitious team, and we will compete for titles,” Mokwena said.

Al Ahly and Zamalek have dominated Egyptian football for decades and possess a rich history both domestically and on the African continent.

However, Mokwena insists Pyramids are now building a history of their own.

“Al Ahly and Zamalek have a great history built over decades. Pyramids is now making its own history and creating its own unique mark,” he added.

The South African coach also praised the club’s management for its efforts to develop Pyramids and increase their support base.

“The Pyramids management deserves thanks for what it is doing to develop football and build a fan base for the team,” Mokwena said.

Pyramids have strengthened their position in African football in recent seasons, with the club increasingly challenging the established order in Egypt.

Their ambitions will be tested again this weekend when they host Kenyan side Gor Mahia in the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie.

Pyramids go into the match with a significant advantage after securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg.

The Egyptian side will therefore be favourites to complete the job at home and advance to the next stage of the competition.

Mokwena will be hoping his players can maintain their focus and avoid complacency as they seek to build on the first-leg result.

Progress in the Champions League would further underline Pyramids’ growing ambitions and provide another opportunity for the club to strengthen its reputation on the continent.
