World Cup 2026: Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi hailed for transforming Atlas Lions ahead of France quarter-final

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has earned widespread praise for the tactical identity he has instilled in the Atlas Lions as they prepare for a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against France on Thursday.

The 49-year-old has guided Morocco to an unbeaten run in the tournament, combining disciplined defending with an adventurous attacking approach that has won admiration from former players and football observers alike.

Among those to applaud Ouahbi’s work is Moroccan football legend Aziz Bouderbala, who believes the coach has elevated the national team with his tactical intelligence.

“Mohamed Ouahbi has imposed his style on two footballing giants, notably against the Netherlands,” Bouderbala told AFP.

“He knew how to control the match and came up with an imaginative offensive strategy without losing the defensive solidity.

“Ouahbi has brought added value, and has not been content to just carry on in the same style as before.”

The praise extends beyond former internationals to those closest to the Belgian-born coach, including his family.

“My father is very proud of me,” Ouahbi said.

“My papa wears suits the whole time and in the Brussels neighbourhood where they live he is called ‘Al Pacino’.

“He is always in a suit and tie but now when I give him my tracksuits he wears those instead!”

Despite the growing acclaim, Ouahbi has consistently shifted the spotlight away from himself, insisting Morocco’s success is the result of a collective effort.

Speaking to Onze Mondiale, the coach explained that teamwork remains at the heart of his philosophy.

“I try always to include everyone in the project,” he said.

“I never ever express myself in the first person: I always use ‘one’ or ‘we’.

“The moment I speak in the first person I will put distance between myself and this collective logic.

“It is a staff above all else. Someone who thinks he will succeed alone will not do so… well neither for long nor in the correct manner.”

Ouahbi will now seek to steer Morocco into the semi-finals when they face two-time world champions France in the quarter-finals at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, with the Atlas Lions aiming to continue their impressive run on football’s biggest stage.
