World Cup 2026: Motsepe hails Morocco’s historic run after quarterfinal qualification

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr Patrice Motsepe has congratulated Morocco following the Atlas Lions’ historic qualification for the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the North African nation as a source of pride for the entire continent.

Morocco produced a commanding display to defeat Canada 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash, securing a place among the tournament’s last eight and continuing their remarkable journey on football’s biggest stage.

Reacting to the achievement, Dr Motsepe praised the Moroccan Football Federation and its leadership for the team’s continued success.

“Congratulations to the Atlas Lions of Morocco and to my brother Fouzi. Morocco is making CAF and Africa proud,” he said.

The victory has seen Morocco make history once again, becoming the first African nation to reach consecutive FIFA World Cup quarterfinals following their groundbreaking semifinal run at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The Atlas Lions have once again underlined Africa’s growing influence in world football, with their disciplined performances and attacking quality earning admiration throughout the competition.

Morocco’s reward is a blockbuster quarterfinal showdown against France on Thursday, July 9, at Boston Stadium, where they will seek to extend their historic campaign and move one step closer to an unprecedented World Cup semifinal appearance.

The meeting also rekindles memories of the two nations’ clash at the 2022 World Cup, where France ended Morocco’s dream run in the semifinals. This time, the Atlas Lions will be aiming to rewrite history and continue carrying Africa’s hopes at the tournament.

With the support of the continent behind them, Morocco now stands on the brink of another landmark achievement as they prepare to face one of the tournament favourites in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the quarterfinals.
