Morocco’s Atlas Lions etched their names into football folklore on Saturday, defeating Canada 3-0 in a fiery Round of 16 clash to become the first African nation ever to score three goals in a FIFA World Cup knockout match.

In front of a raucous crowd, the North African giants combined tactical discipline with lethal transition play to break a physical deadlock, breaking records previously untouched by the continent’s historic quarterfinalists of 1990, 2002, and 2010.

Ounahi sparks second-half surge

Following a bruising first half that ended scoreless and saw the referee issue four yellow cards to each side, Morocco found their breakthrough in the 50th minute.

Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi latched onto a precisely delivered free kick from full-back Achraf Hakimi, guiding a low, right-footed strike past the Canadian goalkeeper to break the tension.

Canada responded with aggressive frontline pressure, but the Moroccan defense held firm, absorbing the physical aerial duels and launching clinical counter-attacks.

Ounahi doubled the lead in the 82nd minute, silencing the Canadian faithful by netting his brace with a composed finish inside the box, courtesy of a driving assist from Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Díaz.

Rahimi seals quarterfinal ticket

With Canada pushing all numbers forward in a desperate bid to salvage their campaign, Morocco struck the final blow deep into injury time. Eight minutes into stoppage time, Soufiane Rahimi spearheaded a devastating counter-attack, sprinting clear of the tracking defenders to slot home the third goal and officially rewrite World Cup history.

This emphatic victory makes Morocco the first African team to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals multiple times, following their historic semifinal run in Qatar. Furthermore, they join Nigeria and Ghana as only the third African country to achieve consecutive World Cup knockout stage appearances.

The Atlas Lions now travel to Boston for their highly anticipated quarterfinal matchup, where they await the winner of the ongoing Round of 16 fixture between France and Paraguay.
