World Cup 2026: Lamine Yamal matches Jay-Jay Okocha's iconic dribbling record

Spain sensation Lamine Yamal has equalled a remarkable FIFA World Cup record previously held by Nigerian legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha after another dazzling display in La Roja’s 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 32.

The 18-year-old Barcelona winger was named Player of the Match after tormenting Austria’s defence throughout the contest, completing five successful dribbles, registering six shots and repeatedly creating danger from the right flank.

According to Opta, Yamal is now averaging 12 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at the 2026 World Cup among players with more than 200 minutes played, matching the extraordinary mark set by Okocha during Nigeria’s memorable run at France 1998.

The statistic underlines the teenager’s growing status as one of the tournament’s biggest stars and one of world football’s most electrifying talents.

“Lamine Yamal is a very important player for the national team and the future of this national team obviously also has a lot to do with how decisive Lamine Yamal can be in the matches,” Spain legend Andres Iniesta said earlier this week.

Yamal’s World Cup campaign so far

Despite arriving at the tournament with lingering fitness concerns, Yamal has steadily grown into Spain’s most influential attacking player.

He featured only briefly in Spain’s surprising 0-0 draw against Cape Verde as Luis de la Fuente carefully managed his minutes following a hamstring issue. However, his return to full fitness transformed La Roja’s attack.

The Barcelona prodigy scored in the emphatic victory over Saudi Arabia before helping Spain secure top spot in Group H with a disciplined win over Uruguay. He has consistently stretched defences, created space for teammates and restored the directness that was missing in Spain’s opening match.

Against Austria, Yamal produced arguably his finest performance of the tournament. Although he did not score or assist, his movement and one-on-one ability repeatedly destabilised the Austrian back line and opened opportunities for Mikel Oyarzabal, who struck twice in the 3-0 triumph.

At just 18 years old, Yamal has already become one of the faces of the competition, adding another milestone to a growing list of records after previously becoming the youngest European player to be involved in ten victories at major international tournaments.

Spain’s next challenge

Spain will continue their quest for a second World Cup title on Monday, July 6, in Arlington, where it will face Portugal.

Luis de la Fuente’s side remain unbeaten in the tournament, have yet to concede a single goal, and are riding a 34-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. After a slow start against Cape Verde, La Roja have steadily gathered momentum and now look every inch genuine contenders for the trophy.

With Lamine Yamal operating at a level that evokes memories of Jay-Jay Okocha at his dazzling best, Spain believe they possess the individual brilliance capable of carrying them deep into the latter stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
