Egypt legend Ahmed Fathi has backed Morocco to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the Atlas Lions continue another impressive run on the global stage.

Morocco have once again emerged as one of Africa’s standout performers at the tournament after building on the historic success they achieved at the 2022 World Cup, where they became the first African and Arab nation to finish in fourth place.

The North Africans have impressed throughout the current competition, finishing second in Group C with seven points after a draw against Brazil and victories over Scotland and Haiti.

Their momentum continued in the Round of 32, where they eliminated the Netherlands on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw after regular and extra time.

Fathi praises Morocco’s strength and mentality

Speaking during an appearance on the Pharaohs of Football programme on ON Sport channel, Fathi said he believes Morocco are capable of going all the way to the final.

“I expect Morocco to reach the World Cup final.”

The former Egyptian international praised the organisation and confidence shown by the Atlas Lions during their campaign so far.

“The Moroccan team is very strong, and has imposed its rhythm significantly during the matches it has played so far in the tournament.”

Morocco face crucial Canada clash

During the programme, presenter Ahmed Khairy reminded Fathi that France could stand in Morocco’s path later in the competition, but the former Pharaohs star maintained his belief that the African side could still progress to the final.

Morocco are preparing to face Canada in the Round of 16, while France will take on Paraguay in another knockout tie.

Should Morocco overcome Canada and France defeat Paraguay, the Atlas Lions would face the French in a high-profile quarter-final clash as they continue their pursuit of more World Cup history for African football.
